Biodegradation of expanded polystyrene and low-density polyethylene foams in larvae of Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae): Broad versus limited extent depolymerization and microbe-dependence versus independence

Li Yang et al.

Summary: Yellow mealworms are capable of biodegrading polystyrene and low-density polyethylene, forming new oxygen-containing functional groups and causing changes in physical and chemical properties. The biodegradation of PS is gut microbe-dependent, while LDPE biodegradation is less dependent on gut microbes. Gut microbial community significantly shift under different dietary conditions associated with the biodegradation of EPS and LDPE.

Enzyme-Triggered Disassembly of Polymeric Micelles by Controlled Depolymerization via Cascade Cyclization for Anticancer Drug Delivery

Jaehyun Park et al.

Summary: The study utilized specific enzymes with high activity in cancer for cancer diagnosis and tumor-targeted drug delivery. NQO1, an over-expressed enzyme in certain tumor types, inhibits oxidative stress and reacts with QPA to induce micellar structure dissociation for drug release. These findings suggest that NQO1-responsive polymeric micelles have potential for improving therapeutic efficacy in anticancer drug delivery.

Degradable Redox-Responsive Polyolefins

Christina M. Geiselhart et al.

Summary: The synthesis of long-chain aliphatic metathesis polymers containing redox-responsive TMBQ units is introduced in this study. The on-demand degradation of the polymer into small molecules upon the addition of a reductant such as Na2S2O4 is demonstrated, with the cleaved TMBQ unit recovered with high purity for recyclable redox polymers. Additionally, redox polymers with tailored functional properties are obtained through postpolymerization modification of the olefinic backbone with bromine and pentafluorophenyl motifs, expanding the scope of possible applications.

Summary: The study presented a facile method for the synthesis of cationic polymers with controlled topological structures and tunable charge densities using thio-bromo click chemistry. Three types of polymeric precursors were prepared and modified to yield cationic polymers with potential for biomedical applications. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and H-1 NMR characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of these cationic polymers with controlled molecular weights and topological structures.
