Dynamic Polymer Networks: A New Avenue towards Sustainable and Advanced Soft Machines

Alan M. Wemyss et al.

Summary: The field of soft machines has seen rapid growth in the past two decades, while the research on dynamic polymer networks has also made significant progress. Recent work has combined these two fields by incorporating the stimuli-responsive properties of dynamic polymer networks into soft machine components, such as dielectric elastomers and stretchable electrodes. Future research directions focus on enhancing the adaptability and transformation capabilities of these components.

3D printing of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoset composites

Xu He et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel 3D printer head for direct-ink-writing that can overcome limitations on printable resins, enabling a wider range of applications in thermoset resins and continuous fibers. The developed printing method can produce composite components with covalently bonded interfaces and comparable mechanical strength to directly-molded samples, and also supports the free-standing 3D printing of UV-curable composites.

A sustainable manufacturing method of thermoset composites based on covalent adaptable network polymers

Xu He et al.

Summary: The study developed a sustainable manufacturing method for thermoset composites by utilizing scrap polymer wastes to fabricate solid polymer films with tailored thicknesses, creating composite lamina with controlled fiber contents via hot pressing. This method significantly reduces resource consumption, waste generation, and manufacturing costs, while allowing for recyclability of both fiber and thermoset matrix. The composites exhibit near-identical mechanical performance and malleability for reshaping without using complex molding tools.
