Preparation of chitosan/sodium alginate/nano cellulose composite for the efficient removal of cadmium (II) cations from wastewater and soil systems

Sara Mola Ali Abasiyan et al.

Summary: In this study, chitosan/sodium alginate/nano cellulose nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared using a green route and used as sorbents to adsorb Cd2+ ions from water and soil systems. The influences of various factors on adsorption and desorption isotherms were investigated, and it was found that CSA-N was more efficient than CSA for cadmium removal. The Langmuir and Freundlich models provided the best fit for the experimental adsorption data for CSA and CSA-N, respectively.

Mechanically tuneable physical nanocomposite hydrogels from polyelectrolyte complex templated silica nanoparticles for anionic therapeutic delivery

George Newham et al.

Summary: Research has shown a facile method for synthesizing organic-inorganic hybrid poly(ethylenimine) functionalised silica nanoparticles (PEI-SiNPs) using poly-electrolyte complex (PEC) templated synthesis, and their use as multifunctional electrostatic crosslinkers with hyaluronic acid (HA) to form nanocomposite hydrogels. The electrostatic interactions between PEI-SiNPs and HA resulted in a coacervate nanocomposite hydrogel with enhanced mechanical stiffness and self-healing properties. This method offers a simpler and more versatile strategy for the fabrication of nanocomposite hydrogels with tuneable mechanical stiffness and self-healing properties for drug delivery applications.
