Polysaccharide-based Pickering emulsions: Formation, stabilization and applications

Fengzhan Cui et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent advances in using natural polysaccharides, modified polysaccharides, and polysaccharide complexes as particles to form and stabilize Pickering emulsions, focusing on the impact of particle properties, emulsion composition, and environmental conditions on the stabilization and properties of polysaccharide-based Pickering emulsions. In addition, the potential applications of these emulsions are discussed, including encapsulating and delivering bioactive ingredients, controlling the digestion of emulsified lipids, and creating fat substitutes.

Fabrication of alginate based microgels for drug-sustained release: In-vitro and in-vivo evaluation

Muhammad Suhail et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of alginate, itaconic acid, and N,N'-meth-ylene bisacrylamide in fabricating alginate based microgels for sustained release of theophylline. Characterization studies showed high thermal stability of the microgels and pH-dependent drug release mechanism described by a first order model. In vivo pharmacokinetic study in rabbits demonstrated sustained release properties of the developed microgels.

In Situ Functionalization of Iron Oxide Particles with Alginate: A Promising Biosorbent for Retention of Metal Ions

Alina-Roxana Lucaci et al.

Summary: In this study, alginate extracted from marine algae biomass was used to functionalize iron oxide particles, resulting in the preparation of a new biosorbent. The obtained Alg-Fe3O4-MPs showed high biosorption capacity for Cu(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) ions. The Langmuir model was found to be the best fitted model for the equilibrium data, and biosorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order model.

Curcumin-loaded core-shell biopolymer nanoparticles produced by the pH-driven method: Physicochemical and release properties

Zhenpeng Li et al.

Summary: Core-shell biopolymer nanoparticles were developed for encapsulating and releasing curcumin, and the effects of coating composition on the properties and release characteristics of the nanoparticles were studied. The encapsulated curcumin showed stable physicochemical properties and enhanced DPPH radical scavenging activity, while the gastrointestinal release was prolonged due to the thick layer formed by alginate and NaCas coating.

Fabrication and characterization of alginate-based films functionalized with nanostructured lipid carriers

Neda Karimi Khorrami et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the successful incorporation of NLCs into calcium-alginate films, improving their UV-absorbing properties and modulating their physicochemical characteristics. The increase in NLC concentration resulted in decreased mechanical properties but enhanced thermal stability and water vapor permeability of the films.
