Cancer Statistics, 2021

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Ferroptosis in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Progression and Therapeutic Potential on It

Jiayu Zou et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis plays a significant role in inhibiting tumor progression in non-small cell lung cancer by regulating the GPX4 signaling pathway and also has a GSH-independent preventive mechanism. It has the potential to become a novel strategy for overcoming therapy resistance in NSCLC, highlighting its therapeutic potential.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Identification of a N6-Methyladenosine (m6A)-Related lncRNA Signature for Predicting the Prognosis and Immune Landscape of Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Chengyin Weng et al.

Summary: In this study, a risk model of m6A-related lncRNAs was constructed to predict the survival of LUSC patients. The m6A-related lncRNAs showed immune association and significant correlations with immune infiltration and functions, as well as the expression of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Additionally, upregulated expression of AL122125.1 was found to be tumor-related according to GO and KEGG analyses.

Ferroptosis response segregates small cell lung cancer (SCLC) neuroendocrine subtypes

Christina M. Bebber et al.

Summary: The loss of TP53 and RB1 in treatment-naive small cell lung cancer (SCLC) indicates a need to inactivate cell death pathways prior to therapy. This study identifies non-neuroendocrine (NE) SCLC as vulnerable to ferroptosis and neuroendocrine (NE) SCLC as susceptible to TRX pathway inhibition, with combining these treatments showing promise in overcoming subtype plasticity in SCLC.

Analyzing the characteristics of immune cell infiltration in lung adenocarcinoma via bioinformatics to predict the effect of immunotherapy

Yi Liao et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the association between tumor immune cell infiltration (ICI) with immunotherapy sensitivity and prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Utilizing computational algorithms, this study identified immune cell content and ICI subtypes in LUAD patients, revealing high ICI scores were correlated with better prognosis and immunotherapeutic advantages.

RBMS1 regulates lung cancer ferroptosis through translational control of SLC7A11

Wenjing Zhang et al.

Summary: RBMS1 is a key regulator of ferroptosis in lung cancer development and its high expression is associated with reduced patient survival. Depletion or inhibition of RBMS1 can promote ferroptosis and sensitize radioresistant lung cancer cells to radiotherapy. RBMS1 interacts with eIF3d to regulate translation of SLC7A11, playing a critical role in ferroptosis evasion during lung cancer progression.
