Elastic Turbulence: An Experimental View on Inertialess Random Flow

Victor Steinberg

Summary: Elastic turbulence (ET) is a chaotic flow phenomenon that occurs when a tiny amount of long polymer molecules is added to a viscous solvent laminar flow. ET is characterized by polymer stretching, which generates elastic stress and affects the flow. This review examines the statistical and spectral properties of the velocity field, pressure fluctuations, and friction factor scaling of ET in different flow geometries, based on experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical descriptions.

Elastic turbulence generates anomalous flow resistance in porous media

Christopher A. Browne et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that elastic instability in porous media leads to an anomalous increase in flow resistance, despite the small Reynolds number. Their study helps deepen understanding of complex fluid flows and provides guidelines for various applications.

Elastically driven Kelvin-Helmholtz-like instability in straight channel flow

Narsing K. Jha et al.

Summary: Kelvin-Helmholtz instability describes the growth of perturbations at the interface of counterpropagating streams of Newtonian fluids. Elastically driven KH-like instability is observed in straight viscoelastic channel flow, displaying self-organized structures of velocity fluctuations. The instability mechanism arises from velocity difference and curvature at the interface perturbation.
