Eutrophication-driven eco-evolutionary dynamics indicated by differences in stoichiometric traits among populations of Daphnia pulicaria

Eric K. Moody et al.

Summary: Microevolution can impact higher levels of ecological organization, with human activities playing a role in driving rapid divergence among populations. The study on the trait variation in Daphnia due to cultural eutrophication in temperate lakes reveals potential trade-offs, mediated by genetic variation, in performance at different phosphorus levels. These results suggest the importance of considering evolutionary change in ecosystem models when forecasting the effects of anthropogenic environmental changes on crucial ecosystem services, especially in eutrophic freshwater ecosystems worldwide.

Zooplankton communities in Precambrian Shield lakes (Quebec, Canada): responses to spatial and temporal gradients in water chemistry and climate

Suzanne Couture et al.

Summary: By analyzing the spatial patterns of zooplankton communities in 73 Quebec lakes, significant variations and differences were found among different lakes, which were related to spatial gradients in climate and lake acid-base status. In a long-term comparison of 19 lakes, despite a decrease in sulfate concentration, relatively small changes were observed in calcium and pH, leading to no major changes in zooplankton assemblages since 1982.

Abiotic and biotic drivers of temporal dynamics in the spatial heterogeneity of zooplankton communities across lakes in recovery from eutrophication

Hui Fu et al.

Summary: The study assessed the seasonal and annual trends in zooplankton community dynamics across 20 Danish lakes. It found significant seasonality and inter-annual decreases in spatial heterogeneity of zooplankton, with biotic drivers such as phytoplankton, macrophytes, and fish playing important roles. Local and regional drivers were identified as important variables influencing spatial zooplankton heterogeneity.

Widespread agrochemicals differentially affect zooplankton biomass and community structure

Marie-Pier Hebert et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic environmental changes are deteriorating freshwater habitats at unprecedented rates. Synthetic chemical pollution, including agrochemicals such as pesticides, have received relatively little attention in freshwater community and ecosystem ecology despite increasing more rapidly than many other agents of global change. Research on the effects of multiple agrochemicals on complex biological systems requires the integration of ecology and ecotoxicology across fields.

Multi-trophic level responses to environmental stressors over the past ∼150 years: Insights from a lake-rich region of the world

Katherine Griffiths et al.

Summary: Multiple stressors impact water quality and biodiversity in lakes worldwide, but the understanding of their effects is fragmented. This study in Canadian lakes found greater turnover of diatom functional groups in high human impact sites, with similar trends in chironomid and cladoceran groups. Differences in temporal turnover and sensitivity across ecozones suggest variations in response to human impacts.

Multi-scale biodiversity analyses identify the importance of continental watersheds in shaping lake zooplankton biogeography

Cindy Paquette et al.

Summary: The study examined the composition and diversity of crustacean zooplankton across different spatial scales in Canada. The results showed distinct differences in taxonomic and functional composition when considered by continental basin, with alpha-diversity varying greatly across space. Beta-diversity was mainly driven by richness differences across all spatial and biodiversity dimensions.
