Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Investigating the effects of two novel 4-MMPB analogs as potent lipoxygenase inhibitors for prostate cancer treatment

Sonia Iranpour et al.

Summary: 4-PMPB and 4-EMPB exhibit similar anti-cancer effects on PC-3 cells compared to 4-MMPB, while being ineffective on normal cells. Apoptosis and ferroptosis were identified as the main mechanisms of induced cell death in these cancerous cells. In vivo results showed that both analogs had similar anti-cancer effects as 4-MMPB, leading to delayed tumor growth without noticeable side effects in weight loss and histological investigations.

O-prenylated carbostyrils as a novel class of 15-lipoxygenase inhibitors: Synthesis, characterization, and inhibitory assessment

Seyed Jamal Alavi et al.

Summary: Catalyzed peroxidation of unsaturated lipids in animals and plants is closely related to the activity of 15-lipoxygenase enzymes. Lipoxygenases (LOXs) play important roles in various syndromes, and synthetic compounds showed potential as inhibitors of soybean 15-lipoxygenase. The position and length of the prenyl moiety were found to be crucial in lipoxygenase inhibitory activity, with 5-farnesyloxycoumarin and 8-farnesyloxycarbostyril demonstrating the best inhibitory activity.
