Self-Assembly of Asymmetric Diblock Copolymers under the Spherical Confinement

Fengmei Zhao et al.

Summary: The self-assembly of asymmetric AB diblock copolymer melts under spherical confinement with surface preference has been investigated, revealing a shift in transitions towards small volume fractions and a correlation between higher symmetry in sphere arrangement and larger stability region. Interesting cylindrical structures such as truncated single-helix and double-toroid were predicted, but transitions between different cylindrical structures were found to be more difficult to understand under spherical confinement.

Block copolymer thin films

Changhang Huang et al.

Summary: Block copolymers (BCPs) are a special type of polymeric system with chemically distinct homopolymer blocks tethered together, used in bulk and thin film forms for nanotechnology applications. Progress in tailoring mesoscopic and nanoscopic structures of BCP thin films using external fields relies on precise control of structural orientation, local alignment, and long-range ordering, with conventional polymer field theory and numerical solution schemes playing a key role. Experimental and theoretical insights into the next generation of strategies for obtaining desired BCP thin film patterns and their industrial applications are also provided.

Effect of branching architecture on the self-assembly of symmetric ABC-type block terpolymers

Luyang Li et al.

Summary: It is well known that phase boundaries of AB-type block copolymers can be deflected by designing asymmetric architectures. A symmetric ABC-type pentablock terpolymer was designed by branching B-blocks, showing control over the self-assembly behaviors through the length ratio of the middle B-block. Interestingly, a transition from spherical phase to gyroid phase without the cylindrical phase was observed, attributed to three complex effects including the branching effect, packing frustration, and bridging middle B-block.

Porous bioactive glass micro- and nanospheres with controlled morphology: developments, properties and emerging biomedical applications

Kai Zheng et al.

Summary: Porous bioactive glass micro/nanospheres (PBGSs) have emerged as attractive biomaterials in biomedical applications, with controllable particle size and pore structure critical for their functionality. Sol-gel processing is the primary method used for PBGSs synthesis, allowing for control over the chemical compositions and pore structures. Recent progress has been made in the synthesis of PBGSs with sophisticated pore structures, and their achievements in bone tissue regeneration, wound healing, drug delivery, bioimaging, and cancer therapy have been highlighted.
