The Restorativeness of Outdoor Historical Sites in Urban Areas: Physical and Perceptual Correlations

Summary: The growing tourist flows have impacted the livability and conservation of ancient city centers, increasing the need for quiet places where green parks are missing. Although the possibility of reusing hidden sites of historical buildings has been highlighted, it is not clear if this scheme can be applied in other contexts. The physical and perceptual characteristics of different sites in Naples and Istanbul were investigated, showing that sound levels inside sites do not consistently account for the perception of restorativeness, while some differences caused by outside noise could. The main perceptual dimensions describing these places included soundscape, appreciation, maintenance/management, and importance/relevance, with the latter strongly correlated with all components of restorativeness.

Effects of Evocative Audio-Visual Installations on the Restorativeness in Urban Parks

Summary: Road traffic noise can have negative health effects on citizens in modern cities, especially in urban parks where it may reduce their potential to enhance well-being. This study explores the possibility of using audio-visual installations that evoke natural features to improve individual restoration inside urban parks, with positive effects similar to traditional installations observed. The size and enveloping shapes of installations, as well as the amount of material used, were found to influence restoration, with differences in response observed in Chinese groups.
