Segment-based resilience response and intervention evaluation of water distribution systems

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of intervention and response on system resilience considering valve layout, proposing an algorithm to identify segments based on graph theory. Critical segments can be ranked based on resilience analysis, highlighting the importance of valve optimization and protection of critical segments in reducing the severity of pipe failure.

Inclusion of groundwater and socio-economic factors for assessing comprehensive drought vulnerability over Narmada River Basin, India: A geospatial approach

Sabyasachi Swain et al.

Summary: This study assesses the overall drought vulnerability over the Narmada River Basin in India by incorporating hydroclimatic, socio-economic, and physiographic information. The results show that a majority of the area is highly to extremely vulnerable to droughts, highlighting the need for immediate attention and resilience-building measures. The proposed multi-dimensional approach can help policymakers proactively plan and manage water resources to mitigate the impacts of droughts.

Urban water supply automation - today and tomorrow

Gustaf Olsson

Summary: Automation is a collection of theories and methods aimed at making a system work automatically as intended, with a critical feature being the feedback principle and providing goals to the controller. It must be combined with a true understanding of people at all levels to avoid misunderstandings and failures, and can contribute in areas of uncertainty, feedback, and complexity. Integrated management of the urban water cycle and handling disturbances are key challenges for achieving sustainable operations in the future.

Evaluation of the vulnerability in water distribution systems through targeted attacks

Aiman Albarakati et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of a vulnerability analysis in different water distribution system (WDS) benchmarks, comparing different attack strategies and centrality measures for predicting water supply shortages. Results showed that removing the most central element and recalculating centrality were the most damaging attack strategies. Degree, eigenvector, and Katz centrality measures showed the best performance in predicting relevant elements in the network.

A study of the water supply system failure in terms of the seasonality: analysis by statistical approaches

Dariusz Mlynski et al.

Summary: The study found that water supply system failures have a distinct seasonality that can be relatively easily predicted. However, the impact of different seasons on the occurrence of water pipeline failure events is not clear. The use of Colwell indexes for seasonality analysis is considered reliable and has no limitations compared to other methods.

Towards resilient water supply in centralized control and decentralized execution mode

Kegong Diao

Summary: This paper discusses the concept of resilient water infrastructures for sustainable water supply, emphasizing the need for centralized control and decentralized execution in a multiscale structure, specifically focusing on water distribution systems. The next step is to identify the optimal multiscale structure for the CCDE based on a trade-off of different goals of WDS analysis and management.

Nodal vulnerability assessment of water distribution networks: An integrated Fuzzy AHP-TOPSIS approach

Hoese Michel Tornyeviadzi et al.

Summary: This study introduces an integrated framework to comprehensively assess the vulnerability of water distribution networks nodes, even under conflicting priority rankings of the methods considered. The framework combines the strengths of Closeness Centrality, Demand Adjusted Closeness Centrality, and a Water Quality Index to accurately characterize the vulnerability of demand nodes.
