Quantitative metastatic lymph node burden and survival in Merkel cell carcinoma

Anthony T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The number of metastatic lymph nodes is the key factor affecting survival in patients with Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). A novel nodal classification system was developed, which showed improved concordance compared with the American Joint Committee on Cancer, Eighth Edition.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Nodal staging convergence for HPV- and HPV plus oropharyngeal carcinoma

Allen S. Ho et al.

Summary: The current nodal staging system for oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) established distinct systems for HPV-negative (HPV-) and HPV-positive (HPV+) OPC, but our analysis revealed that they actually mirror each other. Metastatic lymph node number and extranodal extension were identified as key factors influencing prognosis in both HPV- and HPV+ OPC. A unified nodal system for both HPV- and HPV+ OPC may improve prognostication and staging accuracy.
