Nucleation fronts ignite the interface rupture that initiates frictional motion

Rapid rupture fronts, similar to earthquakes, mediate the transition to frictional motion and are well described by fracture mechanics. The nucleation of rupture fronts precedes slow nucleation fronts within rough frictional interfaces and is a critical question that remains to be fully understood.

Effective Toughness of Heterogeneous Materials with Rate-Dependent Fracture Energy

Summary: Experimental measurements demonstrate the applicability of classical fracture energy equations in predicting the behavior of cracks propagating through obstacles. The crack speed jumps at the entrance and exit of obstacles are influenced by fracture energy contrast, rate dependency, and inertia of the medium, allowing cracks to cross discontinuities at a constant energy release rate. This discontinuous dynamics and rate dependency result in higher effective toughness governing the behavior of these cracks.
