A note on Pade approximants of tensor logarithm with application to Hencky-type hyperelasticity

M. Rezaee-Hajidehi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the logarithmic strain and its derivatives can be accurately approximated using Pade approximants of the tensor logarithm. Compared favorably to the truncated Taylor series, the Pade approximants show higher accuracy and computational efficiency. Through finite-element computations, the performance of Pade approximants in Hencky-type hyperelasticity problems is further verified.

Phase field modeling of coupled crystal plasticity and deformation twinning in polycrystals with monolithic and splitting solvers

Ran Ma et al.

Summary: This study introduces a mathematical model that couples crystal plasticity material model with phase field twinning model to investigate the deformation mechanism of twinning in crystals. The phase field order parameter is introduced to quantify twinning-induced shear strain and crystal reorientation, while a Lie algebra averaging technique is used to determine the Schmid tensor.

Accommodation and formation of {(1)over-bar012} twins in Mg-Y alloys

Krishna Yaddanapudi et al.

Summary: This study investigated {(1) over bar 012} tensile twins terminating inside the grains of a deformed Mg-Y alloy using transmission electron microscopy. Crystallographic features of the terminating twins and associated slip structures were quantified and analyzed, with local stresses computed using crystal plasticity simulations. Basal < a > and < c + a > matrix glide were found to accommodate the plastic stresses near the terminating twins, with defect contrast consistent with lattice dislocations and twinning partials observed along the twin boundary. A dislocation reaction was proposed to establish the interrelationship between matrix glide and {(1) over bar 012} twinning in Mg-Y alloys.

A finite element formulation for deformation twinning induced strain localization in polycrystal magnesium alloys

Jiahao Cheng et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a modification to the conventional finite element weak form to fully incorporate twin-induced heterogeneous deformation without depending on the pseudo-slip assumption. The model successfully captures twin-induced strain localization and associated stress-reversal phenomena.

Phase-field modeling of multivariant martensitic transformation at finite-strain: Computational aspects and large-scale finite-element simulations

K. Tuma et al.

Summary: This study investigates large-scale 3D martensitic microstructure evolution problems using a finite-element discretization of a finite-strain phase-field model. The model incorporates various crystallography of transformation and elastic anisotropy of the phases, and demonstrates robustness and good parallel scaling performance in a 3D simulation of microstructure evolution during nano-indentation. The finite-element discretization relies on the PETSc solver library and efficiently solves the large systems of linear equations arising from the model.

Deformation mechanisms of basal slip, twinning and non-basal slips in Mg-Y alloy by micropillar compression

Na Li et al.

Summary: The addition of Y element in Mg-2 wt.% Y alloy results in a more balanced deformation compared to pure Mg, with different mechanisms of deformation observed in basal slip, twin growth, and prismatic-slip favorable orientation. The high-temperature strengthening in Mg-Y alloy is mainly attributed to dislocation decomposition and Y segregation at stacking faults.

Spectral phase-field model of deformation twinning and plastic deformation

Xin Hu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a spectral phase-field method model of deformation twinning and plasticity, verified through studying the twinning morphology evolution and plastic deformation of Mg single crystals. Furthermore, the model is applied to investigate heterogeneous twinning nucleation, growth, and propagation behaviors, providing valuable insights into morphological evolution of deformation twinning and its effects on elasto-plastic responses of polycrystalline materials.
