Measurement of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide densities by using CEAS (cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy) in nonthermal atmospheric pressure air plasma

Young J. Hong et al.

Summary: Nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasmas play a significant role in biomedicine and agriculture, with radical density serving as a key parameter. Nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide radicals are important species in these applications and can be measured using cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS). The radical densities can be calculated through the Beer-Lambert law, utilizing visible LED and mid-infrared LD for measurement.

Cocktail of reactive species generated by cold atmospheric plasma: oral administration induces non-small cell lung cancer cell death

Chang-Hyun Song et al.

Summary: Oral administration of plasma-treated water (PTW) has shown efficacy in curing advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) without toxicities observed in mice. PTW exhibits favorable anticancer effects on chemo-resistant lung cancer, similar to gefitinib, by inhibiting proliferation and angiogenesis, and enhancing apoptosis in cancer cells. Additionally, PTW contributes to an enhanced immune response and improved cachexia in the model.

Measurement of electron density in transient spark discharge by simple interferometry

Jun Sup Lim et al.

Summary: In this study, the electron density in an atmospheric-pressure Ar transient spark discharge was measured using an interferometric method. A simple He-Ne laser Michelson interferogram method was developed for estimating the electron density of unstable TS discharge. The electron density values obtained from Stark broadening and the Michelson interferogram were similar and proportional to the dissipated energy above 8 kV.

Non-Thermal Biocompatible Plasma Jet Induction of Apoptosis in Brain Cancer Cells

Mahmuda Akter et al.

Summary: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly malignant and rapidly advancing astrocytic brain tumor in adults, with current treatment options including chemotherapy, surgical resection, and radiation. However, challenges such as drug release, tumor resistance, and limitations of conventional methods call for new therapies. Non-thermal biocompatible plasma has shown promise in selectively targeting cancer cells while sparing normal cells, making it a potential efficient and safe clinical device for brain cancer therapy.

Low-Temperature Plasma-Assisted Nitrogen Fixation for Corn Plant Growth and Development

Pradeep Lamichhane et al.

Summary: In this study, nitrogen fixation in water was achieved using an AC-driven non-thermal atmospheric pressure nitrogen plasma jet, with the addition of Mg, Al, or Zn to increase the rate of nitrogen reduction to ammonia. The plasma-activated water, with and without metal ions, was found to enhance germination and growth in corn plants significantly, leading to increased chlorophyll and protein contents in leaves. This suggests that non-thermal plasma reactors could be an effective tool to improve seed germination and seedling growth.

Plasma treatment causes structural modifications in lysozyme, and increases cytotoxicity towards cancer cells

Pankaj Attri et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that modifying the lysozyme structure using cold atmospheric plasma can enhance its activity against cancer cells at neutral pH, while causing activity loss at acidic pH. Plasma treatment induced greater structural distortion at acidic pH due to more oxidation of amino acids, resulting in limited structural changes at neutral pH. The plasma-treated lysozyme was found to significantly induce apoptosis in cancer cells, suggesting its potential as a new anticancer drug.

Plasma-synthesized mussel-inspired gold nanoparticles promote autophagy-dependent damage-associated molecular pattern release to potentiate immunogenic cancer cell death

Linh Nhat Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study focused on the use of polydopamine-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@PDA NPs) with excellent selectivity towards cancer cells, stimulating immunogenic cell death. The damaged cells released damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) after exposure to Au@PDA NPs, regulating the subsequent immune response. Au@PDA NPs show potential for cancer immunotherapy by triggering anti-tumor immunity.
