Symmetrical Pd(II) and Ni(II) Schiff base complexes: Synthesis, crystal structure determination, spectral characterization, and theoretical studies

Summary: New palladium(II) and nickel(II) complexes of symmetrical Schiff base ligand derived from 4,5-dimethyl-o-phenylenediamine were prepared and their molecular structures were investigated using elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods. The crystal structure analysis revealed that the coordination environment of nickel in the NiL complex is tetra-coordinate with slightly distorted square planar geometry. Hirshfeld surface investigation provided further understanding of the intermolecular interactions, and theoretical calculations supported the experimental findings.

Both experimental and theoretical results demonstrated that the DNA-binding affinity of the complexes increases with decreasing electronegativity of the substituted halogen atom.

The coordination geometries of Ni2+ and Pd2+ were square planar, while that of copper atom was described as tetrahedrally distorted square planar. Toxicity assessment showed that the Mn2+ complex did not exhibit any lethal effect on animal cells.
