Potential of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 StripMap data for lithofacies identification and geological lineament mapping in vegetated fold-thrust belt of Nagaland, India

Tanaya Ghosh et al.

Summary: In this study, statics-based textural analysis using GLCM (Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix) was applied to high resolution L band SAR data from ALOS-2 of JAXA to discriminate between lithological facies of the fold-thrust belt of Nagaland, India. The study successfully distinguished sandstones, shales, siltstones and clays, and extracted medium-scaled geological lineaments. The research is significant for geological exploration and mapping in vegetation-covered landscapes.

A novel approach of evaluating favorable areas for shale gas exploration based on regional geological survey and remote sensing data

Xiaofeng Xu et al.

Summary: A novel approach based on geological survey and remote sensing data was proposed to evaluate favorable areas for shale gas exploration around the Huangling Massif. Seven key indicators were selected to classify the study area, achieving high compliance with actual exploration discoveries and eliminating unsuitable areas for exploration. This new method proved efficient in evaluating favorable areas for shale gas exploration with low prospecting degree.

Interpretation of aeromagnetic data to detect the deep-seated basement faults in fold thrust belts: NW part of the petroliferous Fars province, Zagros belt, Iran

Raana Razavi Pash et al.

Summary: Detection and delineation of basement faults are crucial in petroleum geology, as they can guide later deformation and associated structures in younger sediments. This research used aeromagnetic data interpretation and compared it with DEM to identify basement structures in the NW part of Fars province in the Zagros belt. Major NW and NE trending deep-seated faults were found, influencing the structural style in the region.

Evaluation of the use of remote sensors for the identification of oil seeps in offshore areas of Uruguay

Eduardo Vasquez-Dolande et al.

Summary: Remote sensors are actively used for detecting hydrocarbons in bodies of water for environmental purposes or oil field prospecting. Active Synthetic Aperture Radar sensors have been found to perform better in detecting crude oil compared to passive sensors. A simple and replicable methodology has been proposed for detecting oil seeps in marine areas, showing viability and cost-effectiveness.
