Continuous cultivation of microalgae in photobioreactors as a source of renewable energy: Current status and future challenges

Angela Paul Peter et al.

Summary: Microalgae are promising sustainable energy sources for biodiesel production due to their rapid photosynthesis growth rate and ability to be cultivated in various water sources. The utilization of photosynthesis reactions by microalgae allows for the conversion of light energy into renewable energy, while closed photobioreactors provide resistance to contamination and enable monitoring of environmental factors.

Effect of wet torrefaction on pyrolysis kinetics and conversion of microalgae carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids

Yong Yang Gan et al.

Summary: The experimental results of microalgae pyrolysis kinetics are crucial for reactor design in the biomass-to-energy process. Utilizing the independent parallel reaction model, the pyrolysis kinetics of microalgae components pretreated by wet torrefaction were evaluated. The study found that the pyrolysis kinetics of microalgae ESP-31 and FSP-E showed different characteristics, with both species predicted to have a fit quality of at least 97%, indicating the significant impact of low-temperature wet torrefaction on the kinetic parameters of microalgae ESP-31 compared to FSP-E.

Phycoremediation of pollutants from secondary treated coke-oven wastewater using poultry litter as nutrient source: a cost-effective polishing technique

Abhilasha Rai et al.

Summary: This study focused on phycoremediation of pollutants from secondary treated coke-oven effluent using a consortium of Chlorella sp. and Synechococcus sp. The use of poultry litter extract as supplementary material in the BG-11 medium reduced culture cost and enhanced growth rate and carrying capacity of the consortium. The consortium effectively removed phenol, cyanide, and ammoniacal-N from simulated and real secondary treated coke-oven wastewater, meeting statutory limits.

Application of Artificial Neural Network and Particle Swarm Optimization for modelling and optimization of biosorption of Lead(II) and Nickel(II) from wastewater using dead cyanobacterial biomass

Biswajit Sarkar et al.

Summary: The removal of heavy metals through biosorption using biomass is effective, especially at low initial concentrations, achieving highest removal values in a short period of time. Both Langmuir and Freundlich models fit the equilibrium data well, with Artificial Neural Network and Particle Swarm Optimization used for modeling and optimization.

Nitrate removal by quaternized mesoporous silica gel in ternary anion solutions: Flow-through column experiments and artificial neural network modeling

Jin-Kyu Kang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate nitrate removal using quaternized silica gel in ternary solutions, and to predict the removal rates of anions in column experiments through an artificial neural network model. The experiments showed dynamic and competitive removal behaviors of anions in the columns, with q-SG demonstrating potential for effective removal of nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate in ternary solutions.
