New, tough and strong lithium metasilicate dental glass-ceramic

Viviane O. Soares et al.

Summary: Glass-ceramics based on lithium metasilicate (LS) crystals were developed with a house-of-cards microstructure. The material exhibited favorable mechanical properties such as high fracture toughness and strength, as well as reasonable machinability, making it a promising candidate for dental restorative applications. Further optimization of its properties could enhance its suitability for various dental applications.

Toughening by revitrification of Li2SiO3 crystals in Obsidian® dental glass-ceramic

Julia Lubauer et al.

Summary: The research found that the Obsidian glass-ceramic went through two growth stages during the crystallization process, and the changes in crystal phase fraction were accompanied by a transition in crystal phase types, indicating a change in mechanical properties; during the crystallization process, the toughness of the material showed a reverse trend with the decrease in crystal fraction and size, mainly due to the relaxation of residual stresses caused by the spheroidization of crystals.

Concurrent kinetics of crystallization and toughening in multicomponent biomedical SiO2-Li2O-P2O5-ZrO2 glass-ceramics

Julia Lubauer et al.

Summary: The crystallization kinetics of two pre-crystallized multicomponent dental glass-ceramics were investigated, showing that the isothermal stage is dominated by the transformation of Li2SiO3 in Li2Si2O5, inducing the impingement of nanocrystals into clusters. The kinetics of toughening closely followed the evolution of crystallinity in both systems.

Structure of disordered materials under ambient to extreme conditions revealed by synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques at SPring-8-recent instrumentation and synergic collaboration with modelling and topological analyses

Koji Ohara et al.

Summary: The lack of experimental data has hindered the understanding of the structure of disordered materials. However, advancements in hard X-ray technology have provided high-quality data, improving our understanding of order in disordered materials. Progress in instrumentation and data analysis techniques at SPring-8 over the past 20 years has further enhanced research on the topology in disordered materials.
