A review on sustainability, health, and safety issues of electrical discharge machining

Binoy Kumar Baroi et al.

Summary: Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a widely used non-traditional machining process in various industries, but it has drawbacks such as low material removal rate, high power consumption, and generation of toxic waste. This article discusses the emergence of toxic fumes during machining and explores alternative dielectric mediums for EDM. The review focuses on the machining performance of different green EDM techniques, the environmental impact, and personnel health and safety. Different diseases caused by toxic gases are also reviewed, providing insights for future research.

Assessment of the impacts of bio-dielectrics on the textural features and recast-layers of EDM-surfaces

Shirsendu Das et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of alternative dielectrics such as vegetable oils in EDM, finding that within a certain range of flushing pressures, higher material removal rates, lower surface roughness, and higher tool wear rates can be achieved. However, beyond this range, a decrease in MRR and an increase in TWR are observed.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Effect of Graphene-Based Dielectric for Sustainable Electric Discharge Machining of Ti-6Al-4V

Kashif Ishfaq et al.

Summary: Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is widely used in aerospace and biomedical fields, but its difficult-to-cut nature necessitates the use of electric discharge machining (EDM). Research examines the potential of kerosene-based dielectric with graphene nanoparticles, finding that brass electrodes achieve higher material removal rates in both types of dielectrics.
