Detection of Volatile Toxic Industrial Chemicals with Classical Ion Mobility Spectrometry and High-Kinetic Energy Ion Mobility Spectrometry

Maria Allers et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the capabilities and limitations of high-kinetic energy IMS (HiKE-IMS) in on-site detection of toxic industrial chemicals (TICs). The results show that HiKE-IMS has lower sensitivity compared to classical IMS, but the reduced sensitivity is not a major drawback for TIC detection. The achievable limits of detection for most TICs are below the safety levels, and HiKE-IMS exhibits significantly lower false-positive and false-negative rates compared to classical IMS.

High Kinetic Energy Ion Mobility Spectrometry- Mass Spectrometry investigations of four inhalation anaesthetics: isoflurane, enflurane, sevoflurane and desflurane

Summary: This study reports the first investigation of four fluranes using High Kinetic Energy-Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometric (HiKE-IMSMS) technique. The results show the potential use of HiKE-IMS for air quality control and breath analysis of fluranes. The ion intensities are found to be dependent on the electric field and humidity in the reaction region.

Formation of positive product ions from substances with low proton affinity in high kinetic energy ion mobility spectrometry

Maria Allers et al.

Summary: The study shows that in High Kinetic Energy (HiKE)-IMS, nonpolar substances with low proton affinity (PA) can be ionized via charge and/or proton transfer at high electric field strengths, making HiKE-IMS more effective in detecting these substances compared to classical ambient pressure IMS.

Influence of Reduced Field Strength on Product Ion Formation in High Kinetic Energy Ion Mobility Spectrometry (HiKE-IMS)

Summary: Classical IMS operated at ambient pressure faces challenges in ionizing certain analytes due to the hydration of reactant ions, while HiKE-IMS operated at decreased pressure allows ionization of nonpolar and low proton affinity analytes through collision-induced cluster dissociation.
