Arterial Stiffness and Vascular Load in HFpEF: Differences Among Women and Men

Emily S. Lau et al.

Summary: This study found that arterial stiffness is higher in women with HFpEF than in men, and it is associated with abnormally steep increases in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure with exercise, particularly in women. Arterial stiffness may preferentially contribute to abnormal diastolic function during exercise in women with HFpEF compared with men.

Preeclampsia Predicts Risk of Hospitalization for Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

Dominique Williams et al.

Summary: Preeclampsia/eclampsia is an independent risk factor for future hospitalizations for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), with a median time to onset of 32.2 months and median age at HFpEF onset of 34.0 years. Traditional (hypertension, diabetes mellitus) and sociodemographic (Black race, rurality, low income) risk factors were also associated with HFpEF and secondary outcomes.

Summary: The American Heart Association, in partnership with the National Institutes of Health, publishes annual statistics on heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular risk factors, including the impact of health behaviors and factors on cardiovascular health. The Statistical Update covers a range of clinical heart and circulatory conditions, providing data on quality of care, procedures, and economic costs. It serves as a critical resource for various stakeholders seeking the best available data on these factors and conditions.

Association of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy With Left Ventricular Remodeling Later in Life

Malamo E. Countouris et al.

Summary: Women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) have significant differences in left ventricular structure and function a decade after delivery, especially when accompanied by current hypertension. Continued surveillance and targeted therapies may be necessary for cardiovascular disease prevention in these individuals.

Laurie Soulat-Dufour et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant sex, age, and geographic variability in normal right atrial size and function parameters. It is suggested that current guideline-recommended normal ranges for right atrial size and function parameters should be adjusted geographically based on the results of this study.

Genetic and Phenotypic Landscape of Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

Rahul Goli et al.

Summary: The study found that 10.4% of women with PPCM carried TTNtvs, and there was a significant increase in truncating variants in FLNC, DSP, and BAG3. Women with TTNtvs had lower left ventricular ejection fraction on presentation, but did not differ significantly in timing of presentation after delivery, prevalence of preeclampsia, or rates of clinical recovery compared to those without TTNtvs.

The Lancet women and cardiovascular disease Commission: reducing the global burden by 2030

Birgit Vogel et al.

Summary: Despite decades of grassroots campaigns to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women, there has been stagnation in reducing the overall burden of the disease in the past decade. This Commission aims to fill knowledge gaps and provide recommendations to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease in women by 2030, with a focus on raising awareness of gender-related disparities.

Alcohol Consumption Levels as Compared With Drinking Habits in Predicting All-Cause Mortality and Cause-Specific Mortality in Current Drinkers

Vibhu Parcha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the joint associations between amounts of alcohol consumed and drinking habits with the risks of all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality. The results showed that the relationship between alcohol consumption levels and mortality risk varied among current drinkers, depending on their drinking habits. The study found that higher drinking habit scores were associated with lower risks of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, cancer mortality, or other-cause mortality.

Assessing and Addressing Cardiovascular Health in People Who Are Transgender and Gender Diverse: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Carl G. Streed et al.

Summary: Disparities in cardiovascular risk factors among transgender and gender diverse individuals may not solely be attributed to individual factors, but also to structural violence and psychosocial stressors. It is necessary to take a multifaceted approach integrating best practices to improve cardiovascular health for this population.
