New approaches to the functionalization of the 1-carba-closo-decaborate anion

Akim Shmal'ko et al.

Summary: Two new approaches were developed for the functionalization of the 1-carba-closo-decaborate anion [1-CB9H10](-) at boron atoms. The first approach involved the ring-opening of its 1,4-dioxane derivative with various nucleophiles, while the second approach involved the Pd-catalysed cross-coupling of its iodo derivative with aromatic amines and heteroaromatics.

A Strategy for Selective Catalytic B-H Functionalization of o-Carboranes

Zaozao Qiu et al.

Summary: Carboranes are a class of polyhedral carbon-boron molecular clusters with unique structural and electronic properties, making them valuable building blocks for various applications. Selective functionalization of carboranes, achieved through the use of different transition metal catalysts, has led to the development of numerous synthetic routes for cage-boron-functionalized carborane derivatives.

Iridium-Catalyzed Cage B(4)-Amidation Reaction of o-Carboranes with Dioxazolones: Selective Synthesis of Amidated o-Carboranes and Amidated and Methoxycarbonylated nido-Carboranes

Gi Uk Han et al.

Summary: The study described the Ir-catalyzed cage B(4)-amidation of o-carboranes with dioxazolones under extremely mild conditions. Carboxylic acid used as a directing group was efficiently trapped by trimethylsilyldiazomethane instead of undergoing decarboxylation. Mechanism studies showed that O-methylation occurred before B(3)-deboronation.

Summary: Mechanochemistry has been successfully used for the functionalization of carboranes, including the regioselective amidation reactions of both unsubstituted and substituted o-carboranes. This method is considered a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to typical solvent-based reactions, as it proceeds smoothly without the use of organic solvents or external heating.

Highly Efficient Carborane-Based Activators for Molecular Olefin Polymerization Catalysts

S. Olivia Gunther et al.

Summary: By preparing and evaluating various carborane salts as activators, it was found that activators based on undecachloro carboranes led to highly active catalysts, while other activators were inactive under specific conditions. Polymer samples obtained from different catalysts showed similar performance, indicating that carborane anions do not influence catalyst kinetics.

Variable Metal Chelation Modes and Activation Sequence in Pd-Catalyzed B-H Poly-arylation of Carboranes

Hou-ji Cao et al.

Summary: The development of regioselective poly-arylation of o-, m-, and p-carboranes using an imine-directed, Pd-catalyzed iterative B-H activation method has been described. The study isolated key palladium intermediates and found that the steric factor of introduced aryl groups affects metal selectivity and chelation mode. Furthermore, a series of cage B(3,4,5,6)-tetraarylated o-carboranes and B(2,3,4,5,6)-penta-arylated m- and p-carboranes were synthesized as a new type of molecular propellers.
