High pressure high temperature synthesis of highly boron doped diamond microparticles and porous electrodes for electrochemical applications

Georgia F. Wood et al.

Summary: Crystallographically well-defined boron doped diamond (BDD) microparticles were synthesized under high pressure high temperature (HPHT) conditions using a metal carbide forming catalyst and an aluminum diboride boron source. The microparticles were doped to metal-like levels, contained negligible sp(2) bonded carbon, and displayed a large aqueous solvent window. A HPHT compaction process was used to create macroscopic porous electrodes from the BDD microparticles.

Direct Probing of the Oxygen Evolution Reaction at Single NiFe2O4 Nanocrystal Superparticles with Tunable Structures

Xiaoxi Lu et al.

Summary: The study directly measures the oxygen evolution reaction in single self-assembled superparticles and shows that the NiFe2O4 superparticles' TOF depends on their diameter, while the incorporation of Au nanocrystals significantly increases the TOF, leveling off after a certain concentration. This research provides insights into the intrinsic structure-activity relationship of individual nanocrystal superlattices with tunable structures through direct electrochemical analysis.

Double-atom catalysts as a molecular platform for heterogeneous oxygen evolution electrocatalysis

Lichen Bai et al.

Summary: This study presents a general synthesis method for Co-, Fe- and Ni-containing double-atom catalysts from their single-atom precursors via in situ electrochemical transformation. The characterization reveals molecule-like bimetallic active sites for these supported catalysts, with proposed catalytic cycles showing bimetallic cooperation. The mechanisms for O-O bond formation differ in the site and source of OH- as well as the order of proton and electron transfer.

Correlative operando microscopy of oxygen evolution electrocatalysts

J. Tyler Mefford et al.

Summary: Transition metal (oxy)hydroxides are promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, with their properties evolving dynamically and heterogeneously with applied voltage. By studying single-crystalline beta-Co(OH)(2) platelet particles, researchers have found that the particles change structure and composition from inactive to active states as the voltage increases, ultimately linking bulk ion-insertion with surface catalytic activity. This study demonstrates the importance of understanding the nanoscale structure of electrocatalysts in predicting and optimizing their oxygen evolution activity.
