Heterogeneous electrocatalysis goes chemical

Shannon W. Boettcher et al.

Summary: After a century of research on heterogeneous electrocatalysis, the specific mechanisms involved, particularly in the oxygen evolution reaction on IrOx, are still not fully understood. A new proposal suggests that the reaction is driven by changes in the redox state of the Ir-O active sites rather than changes in the interfacial electric field.

Understanding What Controls the Rate of Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution

Reshma R. Rao et al.

Summary: Using experimental and theoretical tools, researchers have determined that the key step in water oxidation mechanism on state-of-the-art iridium dioxide involves the chemical O-O bond formation between a water molecule and adsorbed oxygen, with the accumulation of oxidized states reducing the barrier for this step.

Solution-Processed Ni-Based Nanocomposite Electrocatalysts: An Approach to Highly Efficient Electrochemical Water Splitting

Jaume Noguera-Gomez et al.

Summary: This study introduces an up-scalable and low-cost solution-processed method for the in situ synthesis of an earth-abundant NiOx-based electrocatalytic film with excellent catalytic activity for water oxidation. The catalytic activity was found to be inversely proportional to baking temperature, with a hybrid nanocomposite thin film formed at low temperatures showing enhanced electrocatalytic activity. The champion NiOx catalyst exhibited remarkable performance with a low overpotential and long continuous operation duration, marking a significant milestone for undoped NiOx electrocatalysts synthesized at nearly room temperature by a solution-processed scalable method.
