Non-Heme-Iron-Mediated Selective Halogenation of Unactivated Carbon-Hydrogen Bonds

Katharina Bleher et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that oxidation of the iron(II) precursor with soluble iodosylbenzene leads to the formation of a highly reactive ferryl oxidant with selective halogenation reactivity. The experimental results indicate a high yield and different reactivities compared to free Fe2+ and Fe3+, suggesting a high complex stability of the bispidine-iron complexes. Additionally, DFT analysis reveals that the ferryl oxidant is the most reactive small-molecule halogenase model, with a relatively long lifetime intermediate and lower energy barrier to halogenation primarily due to steric effects.

Using Data Science To Guide Aryl Bromide Substrate Scope Analysis in a Ni/Photoredox-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling with Acetals as Alcohol-Derived Radical Sources

Stavros K. Kariofillis et al.

Summary: In this study, a Ni/photoredox-catalyzed (deutero)methylation and alkylation of aryl halides was developed using benzaldehyde di(alkyl) acetals as alcohol-derived radical sources. Data science techniques were applied to categorize a diverse collection of aryl bromides and compare them with previous methods, leading to quantitative analysis of reactivity trends and potential functional group incompatibility.

To Rebound or ... Rebound? Evidence for the Alternative Rebound Mechanism in C-H Oxidations by the Systems Nonheme Mn Complex/H2O2/Carboxylic Acid

Roman Ottenbacher et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the oxidation of aliphatic C-H bonds using bioinspired catalyst systems in acetonitrile, yielding a mixture of alcohols and esters. The oxygen atom sources for alcohol and ester formation were identified through isotopic labeling studies. The mechanism of C-H oxidations catalyzed by bioinspired Mn complexes and the factors influencing the alcohol/ester ratios were revealed.

C-H Bond Cleavage by Bioinspired Nonheme Metal Complexes

Justin L. Lee et al.

Summary: This article explores the functionalization of C-H bonds in synthetic chemistry, focusing on nonheme Fe enzymes and current experimental results. High-valent iron oxido species are shown to be responsible for cleaving the C-H bond. Synthetic iron oxido complexes are discussed for their utility as probes and reagents for C-H bond functionalization, with avenues for future research examined.

Deciphering Reactivity and Selectivity Patterns in Aliphatic C-H Bond Oxygenation of Cyclopentane and Cyclohexane Derivatives

Teo Martin et al.

Summary: A study on the reactions of the cumyloxyl radical with monosubstituted cyclopentanes and cyclohexanes showed that cyclopentanes predominantly functionalize at C-1, while the importance of HAT from C-1 decreases with increasing steric bulk in cyclohexanes. Determinants of site-selectivity include the nature of the HAT reagent, C-H bond strengths, and torsional effects.
