In this article, the epidemiology and pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease are reviewed, along with its association with cutaneous symptoms. The diagnosis and evaluation of cutaneous features of cardiovascular syndromes, such as infective endocarditis, amyloidosis, and cardiac myxomas, are also discussed. Dermatologists play a crucial role in recognizing the cutaneous manifestations of cardiovascular diseases in order to connect patients with proper follow-up care as the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases increase.
In this part 1 of a 2-part continuing medical education series, we review the epidemiology and pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease, its association with cutaneous symptoms, and the diagnosis and evaluation of cutaneous features of cardiovascular syndromes, including infective endocarditis, amyloidosis, and cardiac myxomas. As the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases increase, dermatologists play an essential role in recognizing the cutaneous manifestations of cardiovascular diseases in order to appropriately connect patients with follow-up care.
