Identifying and testing marker-trait associations for growth and phenology in three pine species: Implications for genomic prediction

Annika Perry et al.

Summary: In this study, genomic prediction was used to identify marker-trait associations related to growth and phenology in tree species. Predictive models based on these associations showed significant correlations with observed trait values at certain sites. However, caution is needed when applying these models to trees grown in different environments.

Admixture and selection patterns across the European distribution of Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris (Pinaceae)

Witold Wachowiak et al.

Summary: This study analysed genetic polymorphism in populations of Pinus sylvestris in Europe using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers. The results suggest that the patterns of variation are most likely due to colonization from multiple sources and efficient gene flow. Furthermore, several genes showing molecular signatures of selection in response to temperature variation were identified.

A transcriptomic view to wounding response in young Scots pine stems

Kean-Jin Lim et al.

Summary: The stress response of five-year-old Scots pine xylem to mechanical wounding was studied using RNA sequencing, revealing a bimodal response with early induction of transcripts related to stress, defense, and cell wall modification, followed by a later wave of secondary metabolism activation. Stilbene biosynthesis, particularly pinosylvin and its monomethyl ether, was induced after wounding, showing similarities and differences compared to heartwood formation responses. Pine resin biosynthesis was not induced in the initial four days post-wounding.

Comparing de novo transcriptome assembly tools in di- and autotetraploid non-model plant species

Silvia Madritsch et al.

Summary: Polyploidy is common in plants and plays a key role in crop domestication and agronomic traits. De novo transcriptome assembly is essential for understanding molecular mechanisms in plants, but is challenging in complex polyploid species. A study compared assembly tools on diploid and autotetraploid plants, finding that TransLiG and Trinity performed well in autotetraploids, producing more complete transcriptomes compared to SOAPdenovo-Trans. Including polyploid species in testing new assembly tools is recommended.

Physiological and Biochemical Responses, and Comparative Transcriptome Profiling of Two Angelica sinensis Cultivars Under Enhanced Ultraviolet-B Radiation

Tong Peng et al.

Summary: Two Angelica sinensis varieties, Mingui 1 (C1) and Mingui 2 (C2), showed different adaptive mechanisms and biochemical responses under enhanced UV-B radiation, with C2 outperforming C1 and exhibiting more tolerance. RNA-seq analysis revealed significant gene expression differences between C1 and C2, further elucidating their distinct responses to UV-B radiation.

Candidate Genes for the High-Altitude Adaptations of Two Mountain Pine Taxa

Julia Zaborowska et al.

Summary: This study identified highly adapted genomic regions in two closely related European pine species, contrasting them with a lowland relative. It also found candidate genes for altitude-dependent selection between mountain pines and lowland species, as well as outlier SNPs related to gene expression and metabolism between the two mountain pine species.

Molecular Signatures of Reticulate Evolution within the Complex of European Pine Taxa

Bartosz Labiszak et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of hybridization and introgression in the evolutionary history of closely related pine taxa. The results indicate the significant impact of interspecific gene flow in the divergence of species and reveal asymmetrical migration patterns between different pine species. The study provides insights into the role of reticulation evolution in maintaining species integrity in forest trees.

New Insight into Taxonomy of European Mountain Pines, Pinus mugo Complex, Based on Complete Chloroplast Genomes Sequencing

Joanna Sokolowska et al.

Summary: The Pinus mugo complex, consisting of closely related mountain pines in important mountain ranges, has long been a subject of debate regarding its phylogenetic relationships. By sequencing and analyzing the chloroplast genomes of three recognized members, this study identified mutational hotspots for genetic identification and confirmed that pines from the complex form a distinct monophyletic group. The results provide valuable data for further research and conservation efforts.
