Consistent detachment of supracrustal rocks from a fixed subduction depth in the Cyclades

Bertram Uunk et al.

Summary: This study constrains the timing and conditions of subducted, exhumed, and exposed high pressure metamorphic rocks on the Cyclades islands in Greece, showing a progressive subduction and exhumation resulting in imbrication of a former continental margin. Different mechanisms may trigger consistent exhumation for mechanically strong rocks and weakly coupled supracrustal rocks.

Quartz Microstructures from the Sambagawa Metamorphic Rocks, Southwest Japan: Indicators of Deformation Conditions during Exhumation

Toru Takeshita

Summary: The Sambagawa metamorphic rocks in central Shikoku, southwest Japan exhibit an inverted metamorphic sequence and a large-scale recumbent fold called the Besshi nappe. Recrystallized quartz grain size in quartz schist increases with structural level, and temperatures in the quartz schist deformations are calculated to increase with structural level, suggesting a rapid cooling of the Besshi nappe from above.

Calcite pseudomorphs after aragonite: A tool to unravel the structural history of high-pressure marbles (Evia Island, Greece)

Nikolaos Gerogiannis et al.

Summary: Calcite pseudomorphs after aragonite in high-pressure marbles exhibit a columnar microstructure which can be modified by subsequent deformation. The degree of preservation or modification of the columnar microstructure is used to distinguish between subduction-related and exhumation-related shear zones, as well as investigate variations in strain intensity, recrystallization mechanism and kinematics during exhumation. The ductile stage of exhumation is characterized by strain localization and thrusting at upper structural levels, followed by final exhumation through ductile to brittle thrusting accompanied by syn-orogenic extension.

Natural and Experimental Constraints on a Flow Law for Dislocation-Dominated Creep in Wet Quartz

Alexander D. J. Lusk et al.

Summary: A flow law for dislocation-dominated creep in wet quartz was derived from compiled experimental and field-based rheological data. Through statistical analysis, internally consistent parameters were computed. The study revealed different effective stress exponents for quartz deformed at high and low confining pressures, possibly due to increased activity of grain size sensitive creep.

Insights from elastic thermobarometry into exhumation of high-pressure metamorphic rocks from Syros, Greece

Miguel Cisneros et al.

Summary: This study quantified the P-T evolution of retrograde metamorphic rocks on Syros, Greece using elastic thermobarometry and oxygen isotope thermometry. Results showed different pressure groups related to different metamorphic events and fabrics, indicating cooling during decompression after reaching maximum high-pressure-low-temperature conditions.
