Development and progeny performance of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) in brewer's yeast and wheat (patent) flour at different population densities

Nikola Dukic et al.

Summary: The study examined the effects of brewer's yeast and wheat patent flour on the life parameters of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) at different population densities. It was found that the type of diet, especially patent flour, had a significant impact on the total number of offspring, while population density influenced the number of progeny in brewer's yeast and the standard diet. Additionally, the body weight of adult progeny was not affected by the diet type but was influenced by population density.

Tribolium beetles as a model system in evolution and ecology

Michael D. Pointer et al.

Summary: The flour beetles of the genus Tribolium have been utilized as informative study systems for over a century, making significant contributions to the fields of ecology and evolution. Research using Tribolium beetles has led to major advances in areas such as population dynamics, reproduction, sexual selection, genetics, behavior, physiology, and life history. The amenability of Tribolium to genetic manipulation may provide valuable opportunities for future research in complement with other insect models.

Feeding and egg-laying preferences of the sawtoothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis: Beyond cereals and cereal products

Hagar S. Awadalla et al.

Summary: The study revealed that non-grain commodities such as (dry) fruits and nuts are rather suitable substrates for the population growth of the sawtoothed grain beetle. The survival and adult emergence of the beetles were higher on these substrates compared to legume seeds, although lower than on legume seeds.
