Interface engineering of Co3Fe7-Fe3C heterostructure as an efficient oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst for aluminum-air batteries

Min Jiang et al.

Summary: Aluminum-air batteries, with their high theoretical energy densities, low cost, and eco-friendliness, are potential candidates for next-generation energy storage and conversion systems. Rational design of efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in neutral and alkaline solutions is crucial for the performance of these batteries. A new interface engineering strategy has been proposed to create a Co3Fe7-Fe3C heterostructure with abundant interfaces anchored on 3D honeycomb-like N-doped carbon, leading to remarkable catalytic activity and stability towards ORR. This work demonstrates a novel approach to designing multifunctional catalysts with interfacial structures for high-performance metal-air batteries.

Dual-electrolyte aluminum/air microfluidic fuel cell with electrolyte-recirculation

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: The Aluminum/air microfluidic fuel cell combines the advantages of co-laminar MFC and aluminum/air batteries, making it a promising device for powering numerous nodes in the Internet of Things ecosystems with high energy density, low cost, membraneless, and miniaturized design. The recirculating dual-electrolyte design in the cell exhibits outstanding performance with an open-circuit voltage of 2.2 V and a short-current density of 1 A cm(-2), benefiting from the regular hierarchical porous carbon paper separator that minimizes electrolyte mixing and facilitates recirculation. This work provides an alternative route for cost-effective and high-performance aluminum/air MFCs towards real applications.

Quantifying an acceptable open-circuit corrosion current for aluminum-air batteries

Brandon J. Hopkins et al.

Summary: Primary aluminum-air batteries have impressive specific-energy values but suffer from poor shelf life due to corrosion of the aluminum anode in aqueous electrolytes. Researchers are investigating corrosion-mitigation strategies and defining a technologically acceptable open-circuit corrosion current. By conducting sensitivity analysis and meta-analysis on aluminum-air cells, certain electrolytes and oil-displacement systems show promising results in meeting the corrosion current standard, while batteries using alkaline electrolytes exhibit significantly higher values. With focus on advancing appropriate corrosion-mitigation strategies, laboratory findings may become commercially relevant in the aluminum-air community.
