Ischemic preconditioning of the muscle reduces the metaboreflex response of the knee extensors

Luca Angius et al.

Summary: The study showed that IP significantly reduced mean arterial pressure during metaboreflex activation, likely due to a reduced end diastolic volume. MP was significantly higher during IP compared to SHAM treatment, while PPT showed no significant differences. MP remained unchanged during exercise but was significantly lower during PEMI following IP.

Short-term exercise-induced protection of cardiovascular function and health: why and how fast does the heart benefit from exercise?

Dick H. J. Thijssen et al.

Summary: Regular exercise has potent protective effects against cardiovascular disease. In addition to the long-term benefits, single bouts of exercise can also provide immediate cardioprotection by reducing cardiac and vascular damage caused by ischaemia and reperfusion injury. This immediate protection is mediated through the activation of multiple pathways and can be optimized by considering exercise-related and subject-related factors. Understanding the mechanisms behind immediate cardioprotection can help in developing effective strategies for individuals with (multi-)diseases and age-related conditions.

Effects of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) and chronic remote ischemic preconditioning (cRIPC) on levels of plasma cytokines, cell surface characteristics of monocytes and in-vitro angiogenesis: a pilot study

Lars Hummitzsch et al.

Summary: Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) and chronic remote ischemic conditioning (cRIPC) have been shown to protect the heart against ischemia/reperfusion injury through promoting in-vitro angiogenesis and altering cell surface characteristics of circulating monocytes, potentially mediated by a combination of humoral and cellular factors. Interindividual variations may also play a significant role in the mechanisms associated with RIPC and cRIPC.

Can exercise training enhance the repeated remote ischaemic preconditioning stimulus on peripheral and cerebrovascular function in high-risk individuals?

Joseph D. Maxwell et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that combining exercise with rIPC over an 8-week intervention did not lead to superior effects in cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular function compared to a repeated rIPC intervention in individuals at risk of cardiovascular disease.

Summary: Remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) induces delayed enhancement in endothelium-dependent cutaneous vasodilatory response, as shown by increased skin microvascular responses to local heating and ACh 24 and 48 hours post-RIPC.

Reduced effect of ischemic preconditioning against endothelial ischemia-reperfusion injury with cardiovascular risk factors in humans

Tiffany E. Trachte et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of clustered cardiovascular disease risk factors on the ability of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) to protect microvascular endothelial function against ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in humans. The results showed that individuals with a greater burden of cardiovascular disease risk factors demonstrated a reduced capacity of IPC to protect against I/R injury.
