Analysis of Paralogons, Origin of the Vertebrate Karyotype, and Ancient Chromosomes Retained in Extant Species

Trevor D. Lamb

Summary: This study curated a large set of ohnolog families in seven bony vertebrate species, identifying 255 four-member families and 631 three-member families totaling over 2,900 ohnologs. Comparison of chromosome patterns revealed 17 paralogons reflecting ancestral chromosomes, facilitating the assignment of ohnolog pairs that diverged from each other in the first round of duplication. Additionally, comparisons between paralogons showed chromosomal fusions before and after whole-genome duplication events, leading to the identification of ancestral bony-vertebrate karyotypes and archeochromosomes.

Reconstruction of proto-vertebrate, proto-cyclostome and proto-gnathostome genomes provides new insights into early vertebrate evolution

Summary: The study using the probabilistic macrosynteny model to reconstruct ancestral genomes revealed important findings about the early evolutionary history of vertebrates: the polyploidization events that occurred after the divergence of cyclostomes and gnathostomes, and the gnathostome-specific tetraploidization event.
