Evaluating cost function criteria in predicting healthy gait

K. Veerkamp et al.

Summary: This study developed a combined, weighted cost function to predict healthy gait by minimizing various physiologically-based criteria. Optimizing each criterion separately showed their individual contributions to different aspects of gait, while the optimally weighted combined cost function provided improved overall agreement with experimental data. Careful weighting of various optimization criteria is essential in predicting healthy gait.

Sensory modulation of gait characteristics in human locomotion: A neuromusculoskeletal modeling study

Andrea Di Russo et al.

Summary: This study explores the reflex parameters that modulate human locomotion, particularly focusing on speed, step length, and step duration. The findings reveal specific reflexes during stance significantly affecting step length regulation, with swing reflexes of iliopsoas and gluteus maximus regulating all gait characteristics. Additionally, the hamstrings' stretch reflex during landing phase modulates step length and step duration.

GPU-Based Simulation of Cloth Wrinkles at Submillimeter Levels

Huamin Wang

Summary: This paper studies physics-based cloth simulation at a very high resolution, utilizing regular meshes with an underlying grid structure and a fast block-based descent method for simulating high-resolution wrinkles. The collision handling component benefits greatly from the grid structure, and the system shows capability, efficiency, and flexibility in producing a variety of high-resolution wrinkles effects.

Validation of forward simulations to predict the effects of bilateral plantarflexor weakness on gait

N. F. J. Waterval et al.

Summary: The study validated a predictive simulation framework for walking with bilateral plantarflexor weakness and showed a quadratic relationship between plantarflexor strength and walking energy cost and speed. The simulations indicated that pathological gait features emerge especially when bilateral plantarflexor weakness exceeds 60%.

An optimality principle for locomotor central pattern generators

Hansol X. Ryu et al.

Summary: Two types of neural circuits, central pattern generators (CPGs) and reflex circuits driven by sensory feedback, contribute to legged locomotion. Optimization in the presence of uncertainty can explain how these circuits should best be combined for locomotion, with the key being to re-interpret the CPG in the context of state estimator-based control.
