Renormalization Group Flows on Line Defects

Gabriel Cuomo et al.

Summary: This article investigates line defects in conformal field theories and reveals that the flow on these defects is irreversible, accompanied by a decreasing entropy function. The generalization of the g theorem to line defects in arbitrary dimensions is demonstrated through a flow between Wilson loops in four dimensions.

Flag manifold sigma models: Spin chains and integrable theories

Ian Affleck et al.

Summary: This review focuses on two-dimensional sigma models with flag manifold target spaces, which are generalizations of the familiar CPn-1 and Grassmannian models. They naturally arise in the description of continuum limits of spin chains and their phase structure is sensitive to the topological angles determined by the representations of spins. Gapless phases can be explained by 't Hooft anomalies. In addition, integrable flag manifold sigma models are discussed, which generalize the theory of integrable models with symmetric target spaces. These models can be alternatively formulated as bosonic Gross-Neveu models, which prove useful in analyzing anomalies and describing potential couplings to fermions.

Spin impurities, Wilson lines and semiclassics

Gabriel Cuomo et al.

Summary: This paper studies line defects with large quantum numbers in conformal field theories. It first considers spin impurities in a free scalar triplet and the Wilson-Fisher O(3) model and reveals a rich phase diagram. A new semiclassical approach is developed to obtain these results. For the Wilson-Fisher model, an alternative description is proposed to study large spin impurities. Additionally, the paper also investigates Wilson lines in large representations of N = 2 superconformal field theories.

Fixed point annihilation for a spin in a fluctuating field

Adam Nahum

Summary: In this study, it is shown that the quantum spin impurity coupled to a gapless free field exhibits an annihilation between two nontrivial renormalization group fixed points at a critical value of the interaction exponent. This clarifies the phase diagram of the Bose-Kondo model and highlights its role as a toy model for fixed point annihilation and quasiuniversality in higher dimensions.
