Bimolecular reactions on sticky and slippery clusters: Electron-induced reactions of hydrogen peroxide

Jan Postulka et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles can provide efficient reaction environments for bimolecular reactions by controlling the formation rate of reaction pairs. In this study, we investigated electron-induced reactions in hydrogen peroxide in two types of nanoparticle environments and found that the reaction rate was faster in argon nanoparticles than in water nanoparticles. Computational simulations and mass spectrometry experiments were used to identify the reaction products and confirm the findings.

Generation of (H2O2)N clusters on argon and ice nanoparticles

Andriy Pysanenko et al.

Summary: This study successfully generated (H2O2)(N) clusters on free nanoparticles in molecular beams using a pickup technique, and probed the clusters using time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Deposition and coagulation of H2O2 molecules were observed on Ar-M and (H2O)(M) nanoparticles, providing a method for producing (H2O2)(N) clusters for future experiments.

Spectroscopy, lifetime, and charge-displacement of the methanol-noble gas complexes: An integrated experimental-theoretical investigation

Fernando M. Carvalho et al.

Summary: An integrated experimental-theoretical investigation was conducted to study gas phase complexes of methanol with noble gases, determining their rovibrational energies, spectroscopic constants, and lifetime as a function of temperature. The results show that the methanol-noble gas compounds are generally stable under thermal conditions, with lifetimes exceeding 1 ps in the temperature range of 200 to 500 K. The dispersion force is identified as the essential long-range attractive contribution to the interaction energy, indicating that these compounds are mainly bonded by van der Waals forces in the gas phase.

Stability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon clusters in protoplanetary discs

K. Lange et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation and survival of PAH clusters in protoplanetary discs around Herbig Ae/Be and T Tauri stars, showing that PAH dimers can form in the inner 100 AU of these discs and may grow beyond dimer size in a short time. While PAH clusters may not survive in the photosphere of Herbig stars due to high UV radiation, they are possible in T Tauri discs, suggesting cluster formation as a potential explanation for low PAH detection rates in these systems.

Temperature evolution in IR action spectroscopy experiments with sodium doped water clusters

Daniel Becker et al.

Summary: The combination of supersonic expansions with IR action spectroscopy techniques has been successfully applied to study cluster structure and dynamics, with a focus on the effects of temperature and temperature evolution. The sodium doping technique with IR excitation near threshold photoionization has been used to study neutral clusters, particularly water clusters. Molecular simulations have provided insights into the temperature-dependent photoionization spectra of sodium-doped clusters, as well as the evaporative cooling process by water molecule ejection. This comprehensive analysis sheds light on the temperature evolution from the nozzle to cluster detection in the mass spectrometer, emphasizing the strong temperature dependence of sodium solvation in IR excited clusters.

Pickup and reactions of molecules on clusters relevant for atmospheric and interstellar processes

Michal Farnik et al.

Summary: This article reviews experiments with molecules picked up on large clusters in molecular beams, focusing on processes in atmospheric and interstellar chemistry. It discusses the pickup process, uptake of atmospheric molecules on mixed nitric acid-water clusters, coagulation of adsorbed molecules, and reactions triggered by UV-photons or electrons. The selected examples demonstrate important parameters and reaction processes relevant to aerosol formation and negative ion reactions, providing insights for future research directions in atmospheric and interstellar chemistry.
