Controlling the Spin-Orbit Branching Fraction in Molecular Collisions

Cornelia G. Heid et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates how the initial orientation of NO molecules relative to approaching Ar atoms determines the branching between the spin-orbit changing and the spin-orbit conserving rotational product channels. Tuning the initial collision geometry can achieve a substantial control over the final spin-orbit state of the scattering products.

Shape resonance determined from angular distribution in D2 (v=2, j=2) + He → D2 (v=2, j=0) + He cold scattering

Haowen Zhou et al.

Summary: An l=2 shape resonance is identified in the angular distribution of cold (around 1 K) Delta j=2 rotationally inelastic collisions of D-2 with He in a single supersonic expansion. The rate of Delta j=2 D-2-D-2 relaxation is found to be nearly two orders of magnitude weaker than that of D-2-He, suggesting that the strong D-2-He scattering is caused by an orbiting resonance that is highly shape-sensitive to the long-range potential.

Quantum mechanical double slit for molecular scattering

Haowen Zhou et al.

Summary: The interference observed in a double-slit experiment definitively demonstrates the wave properties of particles, and a quantum mechanical double-slit interferometer is constructed using molecular deuterium. The existence of two indistinguishable quantum mechanical pathways connecting initial and final states of the colliding system is established through the biaxial state.

A Bi-Axial Quantum State That Controls Molecular Collisions Like a Double-Slit Interferometer

William E. Perreault et al.

Summary: Researchers used Stark-induced adiabatic Raman passage (SARP) to control molecular scattering of hydrogen molecules, showing molecules moving along defined angles as a result of scattering from a bi-axial state. By experimentally testing theoretical calculations, they demonstrated the ability to measure the relative phases of scattering matrix elements.

Stereodynamic control of cold rotationally inelastic CO plus HD collisions

Pablo G. Jambrina et al.

Summary: The article discusses the precise control of molecular collision dynamics in cold collisions, demonstrating the stereodynamic effects in collision through full-dimensional quantum scattering calculations. The collision dynamics at cold energies are controlled by an interplay of L = 1 and L = 2 partial wave resonances, with parity conservation playing an important role in modulating these contributions depending on the particular final state.
