Deciphering the non-linear impact of Al on chemical durability of silicate glass

Kamalesh Damodaran et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of aluminum in aluminosilicate glasses. It is found that aluminum increases the resistance to hydrolysis at low concentrations, but has the opposite effect at high concentrations. The study shows that aluminum is easy to dissociate, but it also enhances the chemical durability of the glass by increasing the strength of silicon and the network connectivity. However, at high aluminum concentrations, the preferential dissolution of aluminum weakens the silicate network and reduces the glass resistance.

Atomic and micro-structure features of nanoporous aluminosilicate glasses from reactive molecular dynamics simulations

Thiruvilla S. Mahadevan et al.

Summary: The long-term chemical durability of borosilicate glasses is achieved through the formation of a porous aluminosilicate gel layer, which limits water transport and corrosion. Understanding the porous silicate gel layer is crucial for elucidating the corrosion mechanism of these glasses and designing new glass compositions. The use of charge scaling techniques is effective for generating porous structures with controllable pore morphologies. The porosities and pore size distributions of the porous structures are strongly correlated to processing temperature and local atomic structure.
