APOE Genotype Modifies the Plasma Oxylipin Response to Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation in Healthy Individuals

Rasha N. M. Saleh et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the APOE genotype modulated the plasma oxylipin response to increased EPA+DHA intake, with APOE4 carriers showing the greatest increases following high dose n-3 PUFA supplementation for 12 months.

20-HETE interferes with insulin signaling and contributes to obesity-driven insulin resistance

Ankit Gilani et al.

Summary: The study found that 20-HETE interferes with insulin signaling and contributes to diet-driven insulin resistance, with potential involvement of its receptor GPR75. Administration of a 20-HETE antagonist attenuated weight gain and prevented the development of hyperglycemia and impaired glucose metabolism in mice.

Regression of human coronary artery plaque is associated with a high ratio of (18-hydroxy-eicosapentaenoic acid plus resolvin E1) to leukotriene B4

Francine K. Welty et al.

Summary: The presence of higher levels of EPA+DHA in the plasma was associated with increased levels of two SPMs, resolvin E1 and maresin 1, as well as HEPE. Patients with low EPA+DHA levels had a low (18-HEPE+resolvin E1)/LTB4 ratio and showed significant plaque progression, while those with high levels had either low ratios with progression or high ratios with regression. This suggests that an imbalance between pro-resolving and proinflammatory lipid mediators is linked to plaque progression in CAD patients, potentially explaining the benefits of EPA and DHA.

Resolvin E1-ChemR23 Axis Regulates the Hepatic Metabolic and Inflammatory Transcriptional Landscape in Obesity at the Whole Genome and Exon Level

Abrar E. Al-Shaer et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the RvE1-ChemR23 axis plays a crucial role in glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and inflammation, largely dependent on the expression level of ChemR23.

Synergizing Mouse and Human Studies to Understand the Heterogeneity of Obesity

Penny Gordon-Larsen et al.

Summary: This review discusses the fundamental gaps in knowledge of obesity heterogeneity and advocates for approaches to overcome limitations in the field. Best scientific practices are suggested to ensure strong rigor for investigators to delineate the sources of heterogeneity in the population with obesity. It is proposed that obesity should be considered as a heterogeneous disease with complex mechanisms and etiologies, requiring unique prevention and treatment strategies tailored to the individual.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids, specialized pro-resolving mediators, and targeting inflammation resolution in the age of precision nutrition

Abrar E. Al-Shaer et al.

Summary: Chronic inflammation plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of various diseases, with specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) being crucial for resolving inflammation. Increasing dietary intake of EPA/DHA may be a viable strategy for promoting inflammation resolution, although research on the effectiveness of EPA/DHA supplementation in improving inflammatory status has shown inconsistencies.

Sex Differences in Pulmonary Eicosanoids and Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediators in Response to Ozone Exposure

Michael J. Yaeger et al.

Summary: Studies have shown a significant increase in pulmonary inflammatory response and bioactive lipid mediator response in female mice following O-3 gas exposure, and ovariectomy exacerbates this response. Compared to males, females exhibit higher levels of neutrophils and pro-inflammatory lipid mediators after exposure, demonstrating a dimorphic response in the lipid mediator metabolism.
