A theoretical and experimental investigation of hetero- vs. homo-connectivity in barium silicates

Benjamin J. A. Moulton et al.

Summary: Barium silicates, which are used in important technologies such as LEDs, have different crystalline phases with various silicate tetrahedral and connectivity profiles. The Si-29 MAS NMR and Raman spectroscopic manifestations of the connectivities in seven barium silicates were analyzed, revealing differences in frequency ranges between homo-connected and hetero-connected silicates. Experimental measurements and first-principles calculations were used to rationalize the structure of these complex systems.

Speciation and polymerization in a barium silicate glass: Evidence from 29Si NMR and Raman spectroscopies

Benjamin J. A. Moulton et al.

Summary: Raman and NMR spectroscopies have been used to study the polymerization of silicate glasses, with this study showing that the structural interpretation of 40BaO-60SiO(2) glass was robust by combining evidence from both techniques. The distribution of Q(n) and composition of the glass support the stoichiometry Ba0.66SiO2.66, indicating a consistent level of polymerization.

Spectral Resolution and Raman Q3 and Q2 cross sections in ∼40 mol% Na2O glasses

H. W. Nesbitt et al.

Summary: By conducting Si-29 NMR experimental studies on glasses, the abundances of Q species can be accurately determined, allowing for the establishment of Raman Q(3) and Q(2) cross sections for specific compositions. The Q(2) band in the Raman spectrum is Lorentzian in shape, while the Q(3) band is asymmetric, with increasing asymmetry correlated with higher alkali content due to alkali-BO interactions. This increase in alkali content weakens Si-O coulombic interactions, leading to asymmetric Q(3) line shapes. With these cross sections established, Raman spectroscopy can now provide highly accurate estimates of Q species in silicate glasses and melts.

New interaction potentials for alkaline earth silicate and borate glasses

Yueh-Ting Shih et al.

Summary: New interaction potentials were developed for molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the influence of Mg and Ca on alkaline earth silicates and borates. The elastic moduli of alkaline earth silicate glasses increase with higher modifier content, with magnesium contributing to higher connectivity and more rigid connections compared to calcium. In alkaline earth borates, the presence of N4 leads to a more rigid network structure and higher elastic moduli, particularly in calcium borate.
