Identification of lung innervating sensory neurons and their target specificity

Yujuan Su et al.

Summary: The lung, known as the gas exchange organ, plays a critical role in responding to the aerosol environment through the interaction with the nervous system. However, the diversity and specificity of lung innervating neurons are not well understood. In this study, the researchers investigated the cell body location, molecular signature, and projection pattern of lung innervating sensory neurons. Their findings provide a foundation for understanding the function of these neurons in the lung.

Mini Review: Central Organization of Airway Afferent Nerve Circuits

Robert Behrens et al.

Summary: Airway afferents monitor local chemical and physical environments in airway and lungs, regulating neural circuits involved in respiratory control, sensory encoding, and cognitive processing. Recent research highlights the central wiring of airway afferent circuits in the brainstem and brain, providing new insights into airway sensory processing. Describing the molecular diversity of airway afferents may shape future research on central connectivity of these pathways.

Intralaryngeal application of ATP evokes apneic response mainly via acting on P2X3 (P2X2/3) receptors of the superior laryngeal nerve in postnatal rats

Jianguo Zhuang et al.

Summary: In anesthetized rat pups, intralaryngeal perfusion of ATP or alpha,beta-mATP induces respiratory responses largely mediated by the activation of SLCFs' P2X3R-P2X2/3R, as evidenced by the elimination of apnea, hypertension, and bradycardia with antagonist treatment or section of the SLN.

Summary: The study presents a practical protocol for locating and accessing the jugular-nodose ganglia in mice, including intraganglionic injections and postperfusion dissection. Care must be taken to avoid damaging vascular and neural structures during the process.
