Inflammation in Glaucoma: From the back to the front of the eye, and beyond

Summary: The pathophysiology of glaucoma is complex and multifactorial, involving elevated intraocular pressure and impaired retinal blood flow as primary factors. Oxidative stress, cell senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, excitotoxicity, and neuroinflammation play crucial roles in glaucoma progression. Inflammatory processes in various ocular structures from the posterior to the anterior segment are present in glaucoma, supporting the hypothesis of dysregulation towards a pro-inflammatory phenotype. Possible anti-inflammatory therapeutic approaches for glaucoma are also discussed.

Retinal function after intravitreal injection of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells in advanced glaucoma

Summary: The study reported on the use of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in treating advanced glaucoma, with no improvement seen in visual acuity or visual field post-treatment. Although one patient experienced retinal detachment and proliferative vitreoretinopathy after 15 days, the other patient showed stable ERG responses throughout the study period. Further research involving modified MSCs is needed to address the lack of visual function improvement observed in the study.
