Pressure on the Electrode to Reduce Discomfort During Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Individuals With Different Subcutaneous-Fat Thickness: Is the Procedure Effective and Reliable?

Raphael Luiz Sakugawa et al.

Summary: The addition of manual pressure during neuromuscular electrical stimulation can reduce discomfort and the maximal intensity required, without affecting torque output magnitude and reliability. Furthermore, participants with higher subcutaneous-fat thickness levels can experience greater reduction in intensity and discomfort when adding pressure on the electrode.

Inter-mosaic coordination of retinal receptive fields

Suva Roy et al.

Summary: The study found that the output of the retina is organized into detector grids that signal different visual features to the brain, and using an efficient coding model, it was determined that anti-aligned mosaic pairs optimize the encoding of natural scenes. ON and OFF RGC pairs with similar feature selectivity had anti-aligned receptive field mosaics, while RGC types encoding distinct features had independent mosaics, extending efficient coding theory to predict the spatial arrangement of diverse RGC populations.

What do blind people see with retinal prostheses? Observations and qualitative reports of epiretinal implant users

Cordelia Erickson-Davis et al.

Summary: Despite the approval and commercial availability of retinal implants for over 5 years, few data are available to answer basic questions about artificial vision outcomes. A study conducted in France and the UK with implant recipients of Argus II or IRIS II devices revealed that artificial vision is a highly specific, learned skill that requires bodily techniques, associative learning, and deductive reasoning to interpret surroundings. The percept does not transform over time, but recipients become better at interpreting the signals received through cognitive techniques.

Advances in Neuroscience, Not Devices, Will Determine the Effectiveness of Visual Prostheses

Bardia Abbasi et al.

Summary: The text reviews the technological and biological obstacles of implementing visual prosthetic devices, highlighting the significant technical challenges and gaps in neuroscience. It emphasizes that further optimization of prosthetic devices alone will not achieve markedly improved visual outcomes without significant advances in our understanding of neuroscience.
