Naturalistic spatiotemporal modulation of epiretinal stimulation increases the response persistence of retinal ganglion cell

Naig Aurelia Ludmilla Chenais et al.

Summary: Artificial vision in profoundly blind patients faces challenges due to the rapid fading of phosphenes upon repetitive stimulation. However, spatial and temporal modulation of electric pulses can prolong the response of retinal ganglion cells, potentially improving the clinical efficacy of retinal implants.

Partial recovery of visual function in a blind patient after optogenetic therapy

Jose-Alain Sahel et al.

Summary: Optogenetics combined with engineered goggles enabled partial recovery of visual function in a blind patient, as demonstrated by object-related brain activity recorded through electroencephalography. This represents the first reported case of partial functional recovery in a neurodegenerative disease after optogenetic therapy.

Photovoltaic retinal prosthesis restores high-resolution responses to single-pixel stimulation in blind retinas

Naig Aurelia Ludmilla Chenais et al.

Summary: POLYRETINA is a wide-field, high-density, and high-resolution photovoltaic epiretinal prosthesis with over 10,000 physically and functionally independent photovoltaic pixels. It can reproducibly induce network-mediated responses from retinal ganglion cells with single-pixel illumination and achieve high spatial resolution discrimination equivalent to pixel pitch (120 μm). This approach has the potential to enable mid-peripheral artificial vision in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.
