Novel crosslinked brominated polyphenylene oxide composite nanofiltration membranes with organic solvent permeability and swelling property

Yanqing Xu et al.

Summary: Through reacting 4,4-bipyridine with brominated poly (2,6-dimethyl-1, 4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO), a thin-film composite membrane with an internal cross-linking network was prepared for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN). The permeability of the cross-linked BPPO (CBPPO) thin-film membranes was highly related to the viscosity and solubility parameter of solvents, and the stability of CBPPO membrane was mainly affected by the membrane charge densities.

High-permeability and anti-fouling nanofiltration membranes decorated by asymmetric organic phosphate

Xue-Li Cao et al.

Summary: This study developed a high-performance NF membrane based on the modification by an asymmetric hydrophilic zoledronic acid (ZA) to overcome the trade-off effect and membrane fouling. ZA played multiple roles in the membrane, enhancing permeability and anti-fouling properties, with great potential for application in water treatment.

Self-assembly of aramid amphiphiles into ultra-stable nanoribbons and aligned nanoribbon threads

Ty Christoff-Tempesta et al.

Summary: The study introduces a small-molecule platform called aramid amphiphile, which exhibits stability and can self-assemble in water to form nanoribbons with high strength and toughness. These nanoribbons can be further organized into dry threads that can support 200 times their weight, extending small-molecule self-assembly to macroscopic materials and enabling new possibilities for solid-state applications.

Waltzing around the stereochemistry of membrane crosslinkers for precise molecular sieving in organic solvents

Mahmoud A. Abdulhamid et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the stereochemistry of crosslinkers in polymeric membranes and demonstrated the importance of crosslinker selection for improving solvent resistance and separation performance in organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes. The results showed that selecting crosslinkers with specific stereochemical positions can significantly impact membrane properties and performance, leading to enhanced stability and separation efficiency in OSN applications.

3D-macrocycles impregnated polybenzimidazole hollow fiber membranes with excellent organic solvent resistance for industrial solvent recovery

Kai Yu Wang et al.

Summary: A new strategy has been developed to synthesize integrally skinned polybenzimidazole (PBI) hollow fiber membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN). The double modification endows the PBI hollow fiber membranes with enhanced chemical stability, mechanical strength, and molecular sieving properties. The modified PBI hollow fiber membranes have a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 217 Da and exhibit a broad-spectrum of applications in various organic solvents.

Fabrication of thin-film composite membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration by mixed monomeric polymerization on ionic liquid/water interfaces

Dayuan Zheng et al.

Summary: A novel IL-assisted method was developed to fabricate TFC membranes for OSN, and a suitable selection of mixed monomers in IP dramatically improved the total permeance of the membranes. The TFC membranes prepared with ILs showed nearly 3 times improvement of the permeance compared to those prepared with n-hexane, and maintained high rejections for both congo red and vitamin B12, demonstrating great potential for practical OSN application.
