Effect of sex on aging-related decline of dopamine transporter in healthy subjects

Seunghyeon Shin et al.

Summary: The study found that in males, DAT availabilities in ventral striatum and putamen were not correlated with age, while the availability in caudate nucleus showed a trend toward negative correlation with age. On the other hand, in females, the availability of DAT in all three regions showed a negative correlation with age. The impact of age on DAT availability differed between males and females.

Long-term effects of resveratrol on cognition, cerebrovascular function and cardio-metabolic markers in postmenopausal women: A 24-month randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study

Jay Jay Thaung Zaw et al.

Summary: Supplementation with low-dose resveratrol improves cognitive performance, cerebrovascular function, and insulin sensitivity in postmenopausal women, potentially slowing down accelerated cognitive decline due to ageing and menopause. Further studies are needed to investigate whether resveratrol can reduce the risk of dementia.

Resveratrol, a Molecule with Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Cancer Activities: Natural Product to Chemical Synthesis

Sunil Kumar et al.

Summary: Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol compound with anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective, and antineoplastic activities, is widely distributed in plants. Literature survey reveals various studies on chemical synthesis and pharmacological activities related to resveratrol. Research on the structure-activity relationship and synthesis pathways of resveratrol is crucial for future drug development.

Mild Cognitive Impairment: the Manchester consensus

Ross A. Dunne et al.

Summary: MCI is a clinically heterogeneous syndrome that can lead to further cognitive decline, but may also remain stable or resolve over time. Diagnostic criteria, including cognitive testing, neuroimaging, and fluid biomarkers, can improve accuracy of diagnosis and potentially guide prognosis. Large-scale studies are needed to determine the practical usefulness of combining multiple markers for clinical use.

Effectiveness of psychosocial interventions among older adults with mild cognitive impairment: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Gigi Chow et al.

Summary: The study found that psychosocial interventions were effective in improving memory for older adults with MCI, but had less impact on executive function, depression, and activities of daily living. Longer duration, more therapeutic sessions, and individual format interventions were associated with larger effect sizes compared to shorter durations, fewer sessions, and group formats. Strategies to enhance memory included behavior modification, memory training, visual imagery, storytelling, memory aids, journaling, and exercise.

Biphasic cortical macro- and microstructural changes in autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease

Victor Montal et al.

Summary: The study suggests a biphasic trajectory for brain structural changes in early preclinical Alzheimer's disease, with increases in cortical thickness and decreases in cortical diffusivity followed by cortical thinning and cortical diffusivity increases in later stages. The timing of these changes aligns with the start of tau biomarker alterations.

Antioxidant effect of Resveratrol: Change in MAPK cell signaling pathway during the aging process

Milena Almeida Santos et al.

Summary: Aging is associated with an increase in ROS levels, and resveratrol can reduce ROS levels in both age groups, with greater efficiency observed in the middle-aged group. Inhibiting PKA, Akt/PKB, and MAPK signaling pathways can alter the antioxidant effects of resveratrol and change the signaling pattern of the MAPK pathway during the aging process.

Decreased 14-3-3 expression correlates with age-related regional reductions in CNS dopamine and motor function in the pond snail, Lymnaea

Lindsay D. Morgan et al.

Summary: Ageing is linked to reduced motor movements in organisms, including a decrease in feeding rate in pond snails (Lymnaea). This decrease in feeding rate is associated with a decline in central nervous system dopamine levels. Proteomic analysis revealed that the protein 14-3-3 is involved in dopamine synthesis and its decline with age may lead to reduced CNS dopamine and subsequent decrease in feeding rate.

Some Candidate Drugs for Pharmacotherapy of Alzheimer's Disease

Barbara Miziak et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with cognitive and functional impairment and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Current pharmacological treatments are symptomatic, focusing on N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist and cholinesterase inhibitors. Research is exploring approved drugs for other conditions, as well as investigating novel compounds. Approved drugs like bexarotene and antidepressants, along with dietary supplements, have shown potential in reducing symptoms and enhancing cognition. An investigational compound, CN-105, has shown promising results in preclinical studies for Alzheimer's disease.

Evaluation of rivastigmine in Alzheimer's disease

Kevin Nguyen et al.

Summary: Dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, is a leading cause of death and disability among older adults. Cholinesterase inhibitors, with rivastigmine being the only one to inhibit specific brain enzymes, are the main drugs used for management. The availability of rivastigmine as a skin patch improves administration and patient adherence, with evidence from clinical trials supporting its positive impact on cognitive abilities with good safety profiles.
