Active inference models do not contradict folk psychology

Ryan Smith et al.

Summary: This article addresses the potential tension between active inference and the belief-desire-intention (BDI) model within folk psychology. It distinguishes between active inference formulations of motor control, which do not require desires, and active inference formulations of decision processes, which do involve desires. Despite an initial conflict at the mathematical level, the active inference framework contains terms that encode both the objects and strength of desire at the psychological level. Simple simulations demonstrate how active inference can enhance folk-psychological descriptions and provide more precise predictions.

Whence the Expected Free Energy?

Beren Millidge et al.

Summary: The expected free energy is a central concept in the theory of active inference, where agents minimize this quantity through action to maintain a balance between exploration and exploitation. Despite unclear mathematical origins and relation to variational free energy, it is understood that the expected free energy is not simply the free energy in the future.

Greater decision uncertainty characterizes a transdiagnostic patient sample during approach-avoidance conflict: a computational modelling approach

Ryan Smith et al.

Summary: This study found that reduced confidence in how to act, rather than increased emotional conflict, may explain maladaptive approach-avoidance behaviors in people with psychiatric disorders. Participants with depression and/or anxiety disorders and substance use disorders showed higher decision uncertainty, while those with substance use disorders also had lower emotional conflict compared to healthy controls.

Gut inference: A computational modelling approach

Ryan Smith et al.

Summary: Neurocomputational theories suggest that Bayesian inference plays a role in interoception, with recent experimental work focusing on heartbeart perception. By applying a Bayesian computational model to a gastrointestinal interoception task, results support the validity of the model and confirm neural process theory associated with active inference. Preliminary evidence also suggests that computational parameters may impact peripheral physiological regulation.

Realizing Active Inference in Variational Message Passing: The Outcome-Blind Certainty Seeker

Theophile Champion et al.

Summary: Active inference is an advanced framework in neuroscience and AI that offers a unified theory of brain function. This letter addresses the issue of complex mathematics impeding the application of active inference by providing a complete mathematical treatment and derivation of update equations for new models. Future extensions to support deep tree searches for sequential policy optimization are also considered.

An Active Inference Approach to Dissecting Reasons for Nonadherence to Antidepressants

Ryan Smith et al.

Summary: Antidepressant medication adherence is a critical issue in healthcare, with interventions often failing to improve adherence. A computational decision making model based on active inference framework was formulated, showing that parameters such as policy depth, decision uncertainty, beliefs about predictability of symptoms, and medication-taking habits can influence adherence decisions predictably. This model could potentially aid in identifying influential factors in nonadherence to antidepressants and help tailor treatments for individual patients.

Long-term stability of computational parameters during approach-avoidance conflict in a transdiagnostic psychiatric patient sample
