A new approach for determining GND and SSD densities based on indentation size effect: An application to additive-manufactured Hastelloy X

Luqing Cui et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method based on the indentation size effect and strengthening theories to measure dislocation density. It reveals that the distribution of dislocations in L-PBF HX is grain orientation-dependent, and the strengthening effect is mainly attributed to edge-GNDs.

Alloys-by-design: Application to new superalloys for additive manufacturing

Yuanbo T. Tang et al.

Summary: New grades of gamma/gamma' nickel-based superalloy for the additive manufacturing process were designed using computational approaches, with processing trials carried out using powder-based selective laser melting. The superior processability and mechanical behaviour of the new alloys were demonstrated through microstructural characterisation, calorimetry and hot tensile testing. Suggestions for refinements to the modelling approach were also made.

Revealing relationships between microstructure and hardening nature of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel

Luqing Cui et al.

Summary: The relationship between microstructures and hardening nature of laser powder bed fused (L-PBF) 316 L stainless steel has been studied, showing that the hardness of the alloy is predominantly governed by GNDs. During annealing treatments, the migration of GNDs and the decrease of SSD density play important roles in the hardness variation of the material.

Cyclic response of additive manufactured 316L stainless steel: The role of cell structures

Luqing Cui et al.

Summary: The presence of cell structures in additively manufactured stainless steel significantly influences its fatigue behavior, with fully cellular samples exhibiting higher strength, lower cyclic softening rate, and longer lifetime compared to cell-free samples. The activation of planar slip due to cell structures delays strain localization and ultimately enhances fatigue performance.

Enhancement of fatigue resistance of additively manufactured 304L SS by unique heterogeneous microstructure

Hongzhuang Zhang et al.

Summary: The 304L austenitic stainless steel with low stacking fault energy produced by additive manufacturing shows superior fatigue resistance compared to its conventional counterparts despite having relatively high porosity. The fatigue enhancement mechanism is mainly attributed to the unique heterogeneous microstructure.

Post-treatment of additively manufactured Fe?Cr?Ni stainless steels by high pressure torsion: TRIP effect

Akbar Heidarzadeh et al.

Summary: The application of HPT at room temperature on additively manufactured Fe-Cr-Ni stainless steel with 12.9 wt % Ni significantly increased nanohardness. Furthermore, a phase transformation to α' martensite was observed, expanding the opportunities to control deformation mechanisms in stainless steels.
