Tribological properties of high-entropy alloys: A review

Zhuo Cheng et al.

Summary: Tribology, the study of friction, wear, and lubrication, is crucial for understanding the service performance of structural materials. High-entropy alloys (HEAs), with their excellent hardness and wear resistance, show great potential in enhancing the tribological properties. This review provides insights into the tribological behavior of HEAs and strategies for improving their performance, both at room temperature and elevated temperatures.

Phase field modeling of ductile fracture at large plastic strains using adaptive isotropic remeshing

Hazem Eldahshan et al.

Summary: In this paper, a phase field model of ductile fracture within the framework of large plastic strains is described. An adaptive isotropic remeshing strategy coupled with the phase field model is introduced to reduce computational time and achieve accurate results. The framework, incorporating volume quality based metric and testing different field transfer operators, shows the ability to predict crack evolution in ductile materials effectively.

Effects of magnetic frequency and the coupled magnetic-mechanical loading on a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy

Hong-Hui Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure evolution and macro-response of a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy under magnetic fields of different frequencies and coupled magnetic-mechanical loading through a real-space phase field simulation. It reveals that the coercive field decreases with the magnetic frequency and can be reduced by applying compressive strain perpendicular to the magnetic field direction. The domain evolution during the coupled magnetic-mechanical loading is mainly classified into three types, indicating different magnetization changes.

On the crack onset and growth in martensitic micro-structures; a phase-field approach

E. Borzabadi Farahani et al.

Summary: This study presents a phase-field approach to investigate crack formation and propagation in martensitic micro-structures resulting from multi-variant martensitic phase transformations. By establishing a coupled system of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation and the equilibrium equation, the evolution of martensitic variants and crack behavior in the martensitic specimen are studied in detail, shedding light on the interactions between martensitic transformation and fracture.

Partitioning of nitrogen atoms and its effect on retained austenite content in an ultra-low-carbon Cr-Mn-N stainless steel

Zhe Zhu et al.

Summary: The distribution of nitrogen atoms in 00Cr13Mn8N steel during the quenching and partitioning process led to the enrichment of nitrogen in austenite, improving its stability at room temperature. Different quenching temperatures resulted in different phase fractions, with nitrogen being enriched in austenite and retained at room temperature.

Interface characteristics between TiN and matrix and their effect on solidification structure

Tian-peng Qu et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous nucleation is an effective method to promote the dispersion and precipitation of second-phase particles in steel and refine the grain size of solidification structure. TiN in ferritic stainless steel can not only refine the as-cast structure grain size, but also pin grain boundaries and restrain the overgrowth of grains during rolling. The interface characteristics between TiN and heterogeneous phases were studied based on wetting angles and lattice matching, with the proposed wetting-lattice misfit theory offering a better reflection of microstructure refinement mechanism.

Summary: In this study, a new theoretical and numerical framework for modelling mechanically-assisted corrosion in elastic-plastic solids is presented. The model successfully captures pitting and stress corrosion cracking, as well as the pit-to-crack transition. For the first time, the role of mechanical straining as the electrochemical driving force is incorporated. The use of a phase field paradigm helps in accurately approximating complex SCC morphologies.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si alloys using a Phase-Field modeling approach. It focused on recrystallization and grain growth mechanisms, as well as the calculation of yield strength and hardness after different ageing treatments. The results showed that the pinning force of secondary particles led to a slight decrease in final grain radius, and different ageing temperatures had an impact on ageing conditions for distinct ternary systems.

Summary: In this study, the phase-field method was utilized to predict the precipitation phenomenon of the gamma phase in Fe-Cr-Ni ternary alloys. The kinetic analysis was performed in duplex stainless steel based on theoretical considerations, and the calculated results were verified through comparisons with experimental data. The proposed phase-field method was found to be able to theoretically predict the precipitation phenomenon of the gamma phase with good agreement between experimental and calculated values, regardless of the type of steel assessed.
