The Mu3e experiment aims to search for lepton flavour violating decay with high sensitivity. To achieve this, special materials and techniques, such as reducing the material budget per tracking layer and using specific detectors, are required.
The Mu3e experiment searches for the lepton flavour violating decay ?? ??? eee with an ultimate sensitivity of 1 event in 1016 decays. This goal can only be achieved by reducing the material budget per tracking layer to X/X0 ??? 0.1%. For this purpose, the tracking detector is based on High Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS) thinned to 50 ??m. The powering and data transmission is performed by means of polyimide-aluminum HDIs, which serve as mechanical support as well. The detector concept is presented, focusing on the technical aspects of the pixel tracker and the associated challenges.
